The Positive Climate Partnership launches an exciting new Carbon Literacy course to drive Sustainability.

The Positive Climate Partnership is thrilled to announce the launch of their new Carbon Literacy Training course. Designed to empower businesses, this comprehensive course equips participants with the knowledge and tools they need to make a significant impact on our journey towards becoming a more sustainable community.

The Carbon Literacy Training course dives deep into the critical issues surrounding climate change, exploring its causes, impacts, and how each of us can contribute to a greener future. Developed by the Positive Climate Partnership’s Task and Finish Group (which includes representatives from Enzygo, Barnsley College, ITS, Barnsley Council, Enterprising Barnsley and South Yorkshire Climate Alliance),  this accredited and tailor-made course is uniquely crafted to support Barnsley’s businesses. It’s not just about adapting to the challenges of climate change; it’s about thriving in the face of these challenges.

By participating in this course, Barnsley businesses will gain valuable insights into climate action, laying the groundwork for them to thrive in a rapidly changing world. As part of our borough’s ambitious plan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2045, this course will be instrumental in building the knowledge and capacity necessary to reach this milestone. Participants will join a growing community of over 72,452 individuals from over 5,404 organisations.

Key highlights of the Carbon Literacy Training Course include:

  • In-Depth Understanding: Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the causes and impacts of climate change, enabling them to make informed decisions and take meaningful action.
  • Carbon Footprints: The course explores the concept of carbon footprints, helping individuals and businesses calculate their own and develop strategies for reduction.
  • Taking Action: Learn how every individual and business can make a positive impact on our environment and why it’s essential for everyone to get involved.
  • Real-Life Success Stories: The course will feature case studies of organisations that have already embarked on their net-zero journey, providing valuable insights and inspiration.
  • Support and Strategy: Participants will discover how businesses can receive support to develop their own net-zero strategy, ensuring that progress is achievable and sustainable.

Upcoming dates:

  • Monday 27 November and Monday 4 December 2023 (2 half days)
  • Tuesday 12 December 2023 (one full day course)

Carbon Literacy Action Day takes place on Monday 4 December to coincide with the UN’s COP28 Climate Negotiations. Businesses attending the training on this day will be part of the biggest climate education and action training event yet. The training is free to attend, although anyone wishing to become certified as Carbon Literate will be required to pay £20 to do so.

ITS will be delivering the course as part of the Advancing Digital Funding. The toolkit creation has been kindly jointly funded by Enzygo and ITS for the benefit of the wider community.

Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways said: “Many Barnsley businesses are committed to becoming more sustainable and Barnsley Council is here to support their journey towards Net Zero.

“I know first-hand the hugely positive impact of Carbon Literacy training, having taken the course designed for council staff and elected members. This training will enable participants to develop their knowledge and pledge to take action to tackle climate change.

“A huge thank you to the Positive Climate Partnership for developing this course, and for the wider work they do to support Barnsley’s fair transition to being Net Zero by 2045.”

Matt Travis, Company Director at Enzygo and Chair of the Positive Climate Partnership: “Enzygo is really excited about working in this partnership alongside the Council, Barnsley College, the Chamber of Commerce and other local businesses to develop a Barnsley-specific Carbon Literacy Training course.

“It has the potential to get our local businesses ahead of the rest in understanding net zero and preparing for changes in procurement around carbon.”

The course will support businesses to adapt to new ways of living and working in order to create a resilient and sustainable borough.
